Important Change This Week!

We have an exciting change for this week in CC!  We get to launch some rockets!!!
Susanne’s bro-in-law has offered to explain how rockets work AND shoot off 2 of his rockets that he has built!
Unfortunately, Dover Alliance is not the ideal spot for this! Soooo……
WE WILL BE MEETING AT 9:15 AT SUSANNE’S AUNT’S HOUSE FOR THE ROCKET LAUNCHING!!!
From Susanne:
This Tuesday we will be launching two rockets from the Wherley’s Great Aunt Carrie & Great Uncle Dan’s house in Dover at 9:15.  Their address is 4767 Deis Hill Rd., NW. If you go past Deis Hill Park, go down the hill and it is the fifth house on the right. Please go past the first driveway and turn right onto the second driveway. We will be shooting them in the field. (After we have launched them, the kids will need to pick up the rocket parts from the field.) My brother in law, also named Dan, built the rockets and will tell the kids how they work before he launches them.
Here is the plan for the morning:
9:15    meet at Aunt Carrie’s house to listen and watch rockets
9:30    drive to Dover Alliance
9:45    have our regular opening in room 103
10:00 – 12    meet with your classes
And it gets better!  Dan has also volunteered to shoot off water rockets that the kids bring in!  We can do this in the Dover Alliance parking lot!
IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WATER ROCKETS…they are pretty easy to make.
Use an empty 2 Liter. The bottom (flat part) will be the top of the rocket. For best lift, attach a cone to the “top.” Dan recommends a toilet paper tube with a golf ball in it. (aside from LaNae…the golf ball thing makes me nervous)  Fins will help it go further also- cardboard or balsa wood works well. Decorate however you like, just make sure the cap is accessible to fill with water. Google “water rocket launch” for lots of ideas.
THIS IS TOTALLY OPTIONAL.  You don’t have to bring in a water rocket – you can just watch the others.
PLEASE RESPOND SO THAT I KNOW EVERYONE GOT THIS EMAIL AND KNOWS OF THE CHANGE!

Should be fun!

Unforgettably Fun Friday

This Friday, local homeschoolers will be gathering for an academic program (Unforgettably Fun Friday) to reinforce memory work from Classical Conversations at LifeBridge Community Church from 3pm-4:30, though all are welcome to participate in this.  Donations are welcome.
This week, we will be covering some Math skip counting and a money game, Western European Countries along with European Waters.  If possible, we may also include going over a History sentence about the Crusades or include going over some parts of the food chain for Science.  I apologize for not having a more definite plan, but I will have things organized for FridayJ
Please RSVP if possible, thanks so much!  -Lily Hayman

Essentials Week 2

Week 2 was all about verbs.  Students can be working on charts C and D, with the goal of memorizing them eventually (think in terms of years?!).  Review A and B also.  Chart A is the most important.
The guide has great info on verbs in week 2 and in the back.
Next week will get into specific sentences and diagramming.
For the writing, finish the key word outline (KWO) for the paragraph on page 14.   There is a nice brainstorming activity on p. 15 to get ideas for quality adjectives, strong verbs, and LY words.
Level B students can also do the 2nd paragraph if desired.
Remember to cut out and learn the new vocab for this week.
Level A checklist is on page 19 and level B is on page 20.
You might want to teach the guidelines on page 18.  Since Sabrina is typing, I have set up a paper with this format, and then she uses it over and over again.  This is totally up to you – we did not do this our first or second year, so don’t feel pressured to do it.
It is a good idea to get the students to identify and mark their dress-ups, like on page 13.  I will continue to talk about this – but it is up to you.
The kids are really doing a great job!  They are fun to be with and tutor.

Open Houses

As you know, an open house is a great way for people to learn more about classical education and CC.  Classical Education is so different from modern education that it is beneficial for people who want to learn more about Classical Ed. to experience a CC class in action.
We are having 6 open house weeks this year.  The dates are…
September 17 – week 3
October 8 – week 6
November 26 – week 12
January 28 – week 15
March 18 – week 21
March 25 – week 22
If you invite someone to an open house and you are pretty sure that they are coming, please let me know who they are and what children (if any) they will be bringing.
Other things they need to know are:
Bring a snack (NO NUTS)
Bring water
Bring a lunch (NO NUTS) and play at recess if they like
The more they know about classical education before they come the better .  Share with them yourself or I would be happy to also.
Our desire is not to get as big as we can, but it is to bless others with something that has blessed us.

Now what?

You might be wondering, “Now what?”  Some suggestions from what we do at home…(others on campus also have wonderful ideas)
We take care of things like math, reading, phonics, handwriting, and piano in the morning.  We read “Story of the World” together for history.  The kids write a few sentences about the “story”.  The kids do about 10 minutes of geography a day – outlining the world or outlining Europe or both…
We do science 1x a week and use Homeschool-Curriculum.co “Ecology and Astronomy”.  It goes right along with the CC science memory work.  If you want to use this, let me know.  I can get you the link to download for free because I know the creator.  🙂
After lunch and recess, we get back together in the living room to spend about 30 minutes on the memory work from Tuesday.  I have a chalkboard where I right out the mem work just like the tutors have in class.  We then do something very similar to what the tutors did with the memory work.  We sing the songs and do the motions, or whatever.  About 30 minutes each day is all that is needed and next week they will be ready for more!
I also keep the audio CD in the car to listen to when traveling.
(If I had more ambition and time, I might have fun with the OILS or the science experiments that we did in class, but alas…)
